Artist Spotlight: Neo-Traditional Master Sarah Chen
Zoe Martinez

Sarah Chen's vibrant neo-traditional work has been turning heads across the tattoo community for the past few years. Based in Portland, Oregon, Sarah combines the bold lines and iconic imagery of American traditional tattoos with an expanded color palette and intricate details that define the neo-traditional style.
unknown node"I actually started with an art degree in illustration," Sarah recalls. "I was doing gallery work and commissions, but I kept being drawn to tattoo culture. One day I walked into a local shop to get my own tattoo, and the artist mentioned they were looking for an apprentice. I applied on the spot." That apprenticeship turned into an eight-year career that shows no signs of slowing down.
unknown nodeSarah's work is immediately recognizable: bold black outlines frame intricate details and dimensional shading, while her use of jewel tones and pastels sets her apart from traditional colorwork. "I love the structure and boldness of traditional tattoos, but I wanted to push the boundaries of what could be done within that framework," she explains. Her specialty subjects include ornate florals, animals with decorative frames, and reimagined classic tattoo motifs with a feminine twist.
unknown nodeWhen working with clients, Sarah emphasizes collaboration. "I always start with a consultation to understand not just what they want visually, but why they want it. That emotional connection informs every design choice I make." She sketches extensively in her downtime, maintaining multiple sketchbooks filled with concepts and color experiments. "Flash sheets are great for showcasing my style, but custom work is where I really get to push myself creatively," she notes.
unknown nodeFor those looking to break into the tattoo industry, Sarah's advice is direct: "Draw every single day. Practice on practice skin until you're sick of it, then practice more. This industry requires technical skill, artistic vision, and exceptional people skills. Respect the craft, respect your mentor, and never stop learning. Even now, I watch tutorials, attend conventions, and study other artists' work. The moment you think you know everything is the moment you stop growing."
